How to Read the Roof Pitch Chart
Roof pitch is the rise per 12 units of run, written as a ratio like 6:12. Angle is that ratio expressed in degrees. Slope % is rise divided by run as a percentage. The multiplier converts a flat footprint area into the true sloped roof area.
Common residential pitches
Most houses sit between 4:12 (18.43°) and 9:12 (36.87°). Anything below 3:12 is a low-slope roof with stricter material rules; 12:12 (45°) and steeper are steep-slope roofs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common roof pitch?
Most residential roofs fall between 4:12 and 9:12, which balances water shedding, material choice and ease of construction.
What pitch is a 30 degree roof?
A 30 degree roof is about a 6.93:12 pitch, close to a 7:12.
What is considered a low-slope roof?
Roofs below about 3:12 are treated as low-slope and usually need special underlayment or membrane systems.
