Roof Pitch Multiplier Calculator & Chart
The roof pitch multiplier (also called the slope factor or roof factor) turns a flat, plan area into the true sloped roof area. Enter your rise and run to get the multiplier instantly, or read it straight off the chart below.
- Multiplier = √(rise² + run²) ÷ run
- Multiply your footprint area by it to get the real roof surface

What Is the Roof Pitch Multiplier?
The roof pitch multiplier — sometimes called the slope factor, roof factor or area multiplier — is the number you multiply a roof’s flat (plan) area by to get its real, sloped surface area. Because a pitched roof is longer than the footprint it covers, you always need more material than the plan area suggests.
It is calculated straight from rise and run:
multiplier = √(rise² + run²) ÷ run
For a 6:12 pitch that is √(6² + 12²) ÷ 12 = 1.1180. So a roof with a 2,000 sq ft footprint has about 2,000 × 1.1180 = 2,236 sq ft of actual roof surface.

How to Use the Multiplier for Material Estimates
Measure the building footprint the roof covers (length × width in plan). Multiply that area by the pitch multiplier for your roof. The result is the sloped area you should use when ordering shingles, underlayment or metal sheet — then add your usual waste allowance. To find rise or ridge height first, use the roof rise & height calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the roof pitch multiplier for a 6/12 pitch?
A 6:12 roof has a multiplier of about 1.1180. Multiply the flat footprint area by 1.1180 to get the true sloped roof area.
Is the slope factor the same as the roof pitch multiplier?
Yes. Slope factor, roof factor, area multiplier and roof pitch multiplier all describe the same number that converts plan area to sloped area.
How do I calculate the multiplier for any pitch?
Divide the square root of (rise squared plus run squared) by the run. For rise over 12 this is the square root of (rise squared plus 144) divided by 12.
